Yesterday I went to the chiropractor to take care of some pain I've been experiencing in my shoulder for the better part of a month. Amazingly, after about 45 minutes the pain is significantly less and other aches and pains are also subsiding!
I'm so thankful to be living during this time in human history when we can experience significant pain relief. But I often wonder if God is as concerned as I am with pain relief. I doubt it. God doesn't want to short circuit the function of pain in our lives. I'm not seeking to minimize the pain many of us feel but I do believe it has a purpose and is very important.
Pain tells us something is wrong; maybe with our body, our mind, our relationships, our experience, our soul. Pain plays an important role in our lives. It keeps us seeking for an answer or a remedy to our pain.
Unfortunately, we often seek to mask the pain and not really address it. We mask our pain with drugs, alcohol, sex, eating, working, sleeping,...almost anything that dulls our pain.
So what about you? Are you dealing with the pain you're experiencing? Or are you dulling the pain?
God uses pain. Look at the suffering of Jesus. His suffering- his beating, whipping, crucifixion- God uses it for the redemption of his creation. How does God want to use the pain in your life? Don't just seek a remedy...let God teach you through your pain.
