Newsletter article 9-2010

I love music. That’s probably no surprise to anyone who knows me. But what may surprise is that one of my all-time favorite musicians is Sting. Yep...the bassist and lead singer from The Police.

Recently, Sting released a new album called “Symphonicities” which takes some of his most famous songs and re-imagines them in arrangements for a symphony. It’s a really fun CD to listen to, but not all of his fans like it. In fact, fans are just as likely to give it a bad rating as a good rating. Some really like the new arrangements and others hate them. Isn’t that the way we are with change?

It reminds me of a book written by Pastor Gordon MacDonald called “Who Stole My Church.” The book is a fictional account of a 100 year old church and it’s members in their sixties, seventies, and eighties who feel that their church has been hi-jacked by loud praise music and computer technology. But MacDonald demonstrates that the church has been in constant change for two thousand years and that change can be a good force to advance God’s Kingdom.

Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. Advancing God’s Kingdom. May we never become so inward focused that we fail to reach the world with the gospel of Jesus. May we always be helping people, both inside and outside the church, grow in their relationship with Jesus.
