On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared that the nation would celebrate a day of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. He gave this declaration to express gratitude for a pivotal Union Army victory at Gettsyburg.
I believe followers of Jesus should lead the way in giving thanks in our country. And not just on Thanksgiving day...we of all people should be thankful. So what am I thankful for? I thank God for...
- God's unconditional love, grace, and forgiveness! He keeps giving me mulligans when I need them!
- my wife, Marnie
- my kids, Sam, Bayleigh, and Davey
- my parents, grandmother, sister, and brother (I miss you guys!)
- the great people in the church I get to serve as pastor
- the opportunities that God is giving us as a church in our community
- great friends
- overwhelming financial blessing
- our new home
- the Rockies making the playoffs and beating the Phillies today!
- fantasy football
- BBQ! (you saw that coming I'm sure!)

What is BBQ in rural Colorado?
Hey jimmy-
Thanks for reading. You're right, we don't have any BBQ out here in my neck of the woods except for what I smoke on my Weber Smokey Mountain.
I do like to go to Kansas City for BBQ though at Gates, Arthur Bryants, Smoky Joe's, Famous Dave's.
In the summer, Frisco, CO puts on a great BBQ competition sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ society.
Seeing that you're from NC, maybe you have heard of Bono's which we have one in Denver.
So what part of NC are you in...tomato or no tomato?
Steve,
I have seen family fist fights over your question.
Here is my diplomatic answer. On true NC style whole hog BBQ, I prefer a sauce made of vinegar, salt, black pepper and hot pepper in several forms. For BBQ pork shoulder an addition of a bit of tomato will not offend. Pork shoulder sliced needs the addition of a bit of brown sugar to the sauce. In parts of central NC, they produce a mustard based sauce that is very good. If you are ever in Lexington, NC, the tomato based sauce of that region is good.
25 years ago I was an NC, vinegar based bigot. Then we lived in Tulsa for a few years, I fell in love with the BBQ of that region. My travels in other parts of the country have introduced my taste buds to BBQ from the different regions of the country.
As for BONO's, never heard of it, and I have eaten in the great places of NC. It may be a corporate version of NC BBQ.
Here is a great link to NC BBQ

Under the side bar, check out the NC BBQ Trail.
I love BBQ!! Good meat, cooked over wood smoke, prepared with love and care, add a few friends and family...that's a party.
Heaven WILL serve BBQ!
Here is the reason I have never heard of Bono's

Thanks jimmy for your diplomatic answer on NC BBQ! I need one day to make my way there for some BBQ and make a pilgrimage on the NC BBQ Trail! Thanks for the link to that great resource.
Living in beef country, I haven't been as exposed to pork BBQ. I have smoked several pork shoulders and really enjoy it!
I didn't realize Bono's was only in Florida.
If you get a chance, enjoy an NC style pork shoulder for me!
I actually have a pork loin going to the smoker now...
I saw this article yesterday and thought of our conversation...
